From the clocktower pass between Semi-chem and M&Co and cross the road towards McCaig’s Accommodation. Turn left along the road and then right at the church onto Albany Street. Continue straight along Albany Street for around 500m. Ignore a fork in the road and continue straight on to the left, signposted for Gallanach. At a second fork, take the left signposted for Pulpit Hill. Next continue straight on up Haggart’s Brae, signposted “Footpath to Pulpit Hill”, which is a steep path with a handrail.
At the end of the path turn right along the road, again clearly signposted for “Pulpit Viewpoint”. Turn right up a track which bypasses a bend in the road. When the track emerges onto the road, keep going straight uphill before taking the first left (opposite Holburn Cottage which will be on your right) then turn left again before following the road round to the right to meet a gate. Pass through the kissing gate on the left and follow the track.
Stay on the track, eventually passing through another kissing gate, before the mast is reached. This is a spectacular spot to catch your breath.
Take the rough path to the right of the mast heading uphill. At a faint fork keep right, heading slightly downhill.
Keep going until you meet a fence; turn left along the fence until a gap in the fence is reached and pass through here (do not climb the fence). There are several faint grassy paths from here, we suggest keeping to the right on the higher bumpy ridge which allows better views down to the sea and to the islands beyond. The path isn’t always clear here but once you meet another fence, again turn left along it to pass through the gap.
Stay on the obvious grassy track leading from the gap in the fence between two hilly sections. Eventually this track heads downhill and passes to the left of a mast.
Turn right onto the road. Shortly after, turn right onto a farm track.
The track becomes more faint and curves round to the right before passing through a gap in the fence. The path becomes a bit more boggy and faint but sticking to the most obvious path will lead you over a small stream on a wooden plank.
Soon the track becomes clearer again and passes through a gate. Stay on this track for some time until it terminates at the road. Turn right along this road. Take the first left which is signposted for Pulpit Hill, then the next right which is also signposted. Keeping heading uphill until you reach the wonderful viewpoint of Pulpit Hill.
Head down a grassy path to the right which leads down to the top of a set of stone steps. Take these to the bottom, turn left and pick up your outward route and retrace your steps back to the clocktower.
